Songs About Cats (or are They?)

Songs About Cats (or are They?)

Perhaps the most famous Cat Song is The Siamese Cat Song recorded by Peggy Lee. The song is from the Walt Disney 1955 classic “The Lady and The Tramp”, an animated film about a classy Cocker Spaniel named Lady who falls for Tramp a scamp of a mongrel. The song however is about two arrogant cats, Si and Am, who have given Siamese cats a bad name ever since.

The Siamese Cat Song was penned by Lee along with Sonny Burke and over the years has also been recorded by Freddie and The Dreamers, Mitch Miller, Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin, Haylie Duff, and Bobby McFerrin. “We are Siamese if you please, We are Siamese if you don’t please.”

Both The Turtles and Petula Clark stepped into recording studios to make very different versions of The Cat in the Window, a song that compares a cat trying to get out of a window with the singer wanting to fly away. “There’s a cat in the window, and he’s watching all the birds go passing by, he’d love to fly out the window, go where the wind goes, and so would I.”

Who can forget the Muppets recording of The Cat Came Back, a song about a kitty that just kept finding its way back no matter how far it was taken from home. “But the cat came back, she wouldn’t stay away, she was sitting on the porch the very next day.”

In 1950 folks were flooding into record stores and asking for I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat. Mel Blanc recorded the song, written by Alan Livingston, Billy May and Warren Foster, about the cartoon cat and canary duo Sylvester and Tweety. “I tawt I taw a puddy tat a creeping up on me, I did I taw a puddy tat as plain as he could be.”

The Rooftop Singers followed up their 1963 number one hit Walk Right In, with Tom Cat a ditty about ‘Ringtail Tom’ who liked to go “strutting round the town” “And when he steps out all the other cats in the neighborhood they begin to shout.” Fast forward to 1981 and the Stray Cats record a musically different song but with a very similar theme, the rockabilly Stray Cat Strut. “Stray cat strut, I’m a ladies’ cat, a feline Casanova, hey man, that’s where it’s at, get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man, get my dinner from a garbage can.”

Norma Tanega apparently owned a cat that she named ‘Dog’ and liked to take that

cat for walks, hence her 1966 hit Walking My Cat Named Dog, which does seem to be about her real life experience of strolling around town with her pet feline.

Most songs though that include the word Cat in the tile, are not truly about cats at all. A great example is the fine song, Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. No cats make an appearance in this song; instead the lyrics contain a very chilling message that every dad should pay heed too.

Bent Fabric, real name Bent Fabricius-Bjerre, had a hit in 1962 with Alley Cat, but this was an instrumental recording so it’s not a song about cats. Instrumental too was Aaron Copeland’s The Cat and the Mouse.

Cat People (Putting Out Fire) by David Bowie was recorded for the 1982 remake of the film Cat People. Great dark and menacing feel to the song but the words have no relationship to cats.

The cat in The Cat Crept In, recorded by Mud was actually a girl, as was the cat featured in The Rolling Stones’ Stray Cat Blues, this one with exceedingly sharp claws.

They Call Her the Cat, by Elton John is about, well it’s not about cats! Neither is Honky Cat, another Elton tune, that one is about a country boy moving to live life in the city.

Three Cool Cats, is a song that was first recorded by the Coasters in 1958 and covered by The Beatles in 1962 (but not released until 1995.) Of course this song is not about cats, but about three teenage boys and three teenage girls. The Beatles also recorded Little Willie John’s Leave My Kitten Alone, no surprise to find that the song is not about a kitten.

U2 recorded a song titled An Cat Dubh, which apparently means The Black Cat in Gaelic, no cat in the song though, black or otherwise.

No cats are in Year of the Cat by Al Stewart, Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent, The Lovecats by The Cure or in Cool for Cats by Squeeze. Who can say what The Cat’s In the Well by Bob Dylan is about?

There must be countless other songs that have the words Cat, or Cats, in the title but are not actually about our feline friends. No doubt there are more songs that are about cats than those listed on this page, but those songs sadly seem few and far between.

But wait . . . wasn’t there a stage musical all about cats. Cats, the musical by

Andrew Lloyd Webber, was first shown in London, England in 1981. Based upon T.

S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats the show features song after song about . . . Old Gumbie, Grizabella, Mungojerrie And Rumpelteazer, Skimbleshanks, Old Deuteronomy, Gus, Macavity, and Mr. Mistoffelees. All of these characters are, of course, . . . Cats.

Feral Cats Can Make Good Pets

by Justin on Jan.13, 2011, under Pets

Feral Cats Can Make Good Pets

Many people feel that feral cats cannot be kept indoors as pets. This is not true. In fact, feral cats are happy being kept as indoor only pets if you don’t attempt to treat them exactly like tame cats.

What are Feral Cats?

Feral cats are cats that haven’t been properly socialized. What this means behaviorally is that feral cats are not tame toward humans. Very often, feral cats result from the offspring of cats that were once owned and then abandoned. As a result, the kittens are not properly socialized to humans and become feral.

There is a critical period during kitten development in which kittens must be exposed to human caretakers, otherwise they will be feral or at least semi-feral. This critical developmental period is generally from birth to 8 weeks old. If the first human exposure occurs past the age of 8 weeks this usually results in a feral or semi-feral cat. Sometimes older feral kittens can be tamed toward one or two human caretakers.

What to do if You Find a Feral Cat or Kitten

Many well meaning cat lovers will find feral kittens and take them to their local animal shelter. Unfortunately, feral kittens aren’t very adoptable and most of the time animal shelters will destroy the feral kittens to make room for tame kittens that are more likely to be adopted.

Fortunately, there are some shelters that will spay or neuter the kittens and then return the kittens to their natural environment. This at least gives the feral cat a chance to live without the ability of producing more feral cats. This program is called Trap-Neuter-Return, and it is being implemented in many areas to control the outdoor cat population without having to kill the cats. It generally works like this: The kittens are caught in a humane trap, such as Havahart live animal traps. The animal is unharmed. Then the cat is taken to the vet or the shelter that participates in Trap-Neuter-Return and the animal is spayed or neutered and is usually given some vaccines. When the cat has recovered from the spay or neuter surgery the cat is returned outdoors in the same location where it was found. Trap-Neuter-Return is a much more humane way of dealing with feral cats and kittens than euthanasia.

Feral Kittens Can Also Make Very Rewarding Pets

Some people who find feral kittens take them into their homes as pets. This can be a very rewarding experience as you gain the trust of these special cats. It is also the best option for the well-being of the feral cat or kitten. Taking them into your home as a pet is even better than Trap-Neuter-Return programs. Taking them in as pets generally works best if you catch them when they are relatively young. The younger the better, although some people have taken older feral cats into their homes as pets and they have been fine.

It is also best to take in two feral kittens or cats from the same litter if possible. If this isn’t possible it is best to have at least one other cat in the household because feral kittens and cats really enjoy the company of other cats.

Feral cats need to be kept as indoor only cats. Cats sometimes behave differently once they get outside. Because feral kittens and cats don’t trust humans very much they may be fearful of approaching your house once they are outside and they may get lost. In general, they are very fearful of any humans other than the human caretakers that they have grown to trust.

I have four feral cats that have lived with me for about 2 years now and they have been very happy indoors. Three were caught when they were 10 weeks old and the fourth cat was caught when she was 12 weeks old.

For the first few weeks after I brought them in the house, all of the kittens used to hiss when I walked by them. Eventually they came to trust me and stopped hissing when they saw me. In fact, now they greet me at the door after work. When I wake up in the morning they come up on the bed to greet me the very first thing. They love playing with toys and with each other. They are still semi-feral, but there is nothing more rewarding than seeing how happy they are and knowing that they are indoors where it is warm and safe.

However, they aren’t exactly like other cats. For the most part you can’t pick them up. One of the kittens lets me pick her up and kiss her on top of her little head, but the other kittens don’t allow it (Actually, they are no longer kittens, but they still seem like babies to me). However, they do like to play toys with me, and except for one of them, they do like to be petted and to have their fur brushed.

Feral cats and kittens would not make good pets for children. Basically feral cats that live indoors with humans like to do their own thing most of the time. They don’t want to be held and will usually only let you pet them on a limited basis. Because of this they are likely to scratch a child that attempts to have more contact with them than the cat wants. The key to making a feral cat happy is to only have as much contact with the cat as it wants.

Also, you need to give the shy ones extra space when they are using the litter or eating. Sometimes it is best to keep their litter and food bowls in low human traffic areas so that they can feel safe while eating or using the litter box.

Vet trips can be difficult because they don’t always allow you to pick them up to put them into the pet carrier. However, there are ways to do it. Sometimes you can throw their favorite toy into the carrier and they will run in to get it and then all you have to do is shut the cat carrier door.

Feral cats are well worth the extra work and they are the best pets ever! Also, because they only want limited contact with humans you generally don’t have to worry about them walking on your keyboard while you are typing or laying across you newspaper or book while you are reading.

In my opinion there is nothing more rewarding then gaining the trust of these cats, especially if you don’t mind taking their special needs into consideration. The reward comes in knowing that you are providing a loving, warm, happy home with plenty of food, water, toys, and veterinary care for these special cats.

The One Simple Step To Saving Your Cat’s Life

by Justin on Jan.11, 2011, under Pets

The One Simple Step To Saving Your Cat’s Life

Why would you feed your cat ‘natural’ cat food? Why, you ask. Because they are going to be much healthier than if they are fed cat foods that are manufactured using high heat. These foods tend to be high in preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and many other items that are not considered a healthy alternative for your cat.

The owners of cats who take their food seriously will opt for a more natural cat food versus the mass produced type. Since cats are hunters, they are accustomed to eating meat. The meat-by products that are in canned food do not contain the high amount of animal protein that is required by cats.

Amino acids, which are an ingredient in animal protein, are used by cats to grow up healthy and continue to be healthy. One such ingredient is taurine. If a cat’s diet lacks this particular nutrient, they can become blind.

The diet required by cats is not covered in canned and dry cat foods. You may not even realize that the food you are feeding your cat is harming him. Just as you do not realize that some of the products used in cat food are items that cannot be used in human food. Unintentionally our cats are being starved of the foods that they need to be healthy and survive.

By giving your cat the most natural cat food that is available, you may be prolonging his life and the quality of it. Some of the best foods for cats are lean ground meat such as beef. You can mix the beef with a vegetable and brown rice. Whole grains are also good for cats. The home made food can be cooked or it can be served raw. It really depends on your cat’s preferences.

Experts lean towards a raw diet because it is more like the one they would be eating if they were still in the wild. While many people oppose this because they are concerned with the pet getting food poisoning from the raw meat, there has been no instance of this happening. As long as the food is fresh, there should be no worries on this point.

Just feeding your cat vegetables is not a good idea. The cat’s diet has to be as close to the one he would eat in the wild as possible. Protein, which is one of the most important parts of a diet are only found in meats and some vegetables.

Organic cat food should not be confused with natural cat food. The organic is grown using no pesticides. Although now we are learning that farmers are allowed by the FDA to use a limited amounts of pesticides and still call their food ‘organic’.

Natural means the food has the vitamins and minerals still intact that your cat will need to develop and remain healthy. Natural cat food is being used by more and more cat lovers daily. The only problem with natural cat foods is the over-processing that it must undergo. And after so much cooking and boiling, most of the nutrients that are reinserted in the food are of an artificial nature. The next step in this unhealthy cycle is of course to then introduce perservatives to maintain color, taste and balance. It is a vicious cycle indeed and our cats are suffering for it. No responsible cat owner would ever settle for feeding his or her cat dangerous crap for the sake of convenience.

Save your cat’s life!

How Cat Training Can Fix Your Cat’s Behavior Problems

by Justin on Jan.08, 2011, under Pets

How Cat Training Can Fix Your Cat’s Behavior Problems

Many people believe that it’s only dogs that need to be trained. This is just a myth. Cats behavior improves greatly and your relationship strengthens with you and your cat once you have imployed a little cat training. Plus, cat training sessions give your cat something to focus their energy on. Many cats become destructive if they naturally have a lot of energy and they do not burn it off.

Don’t be alarmed. Many people have heard that training a cat is difficult because cats are stubborn and independent. It certainly can be if you use the wrong methods. However training a cat using the right methods is simple especially once you have a general understanding of how a cat learns. You need to keep in mind that a cat learns through experiences sort of like a small child. Your cat learns to avoid they will avoid doing things that are unpleasant. They will spend more time doing things that bring them attention, praise, pleasure and of course treats!

So why are so many cats untrained? Well, some people that own cats are making a giant mistake! They are rewarding their cat when their cat is behaving badly. Those cat owners are not doing it on purpose. If fact many of them don’t know they are doing this. A quick example would be if your cat is excessively meowing and you stop them by holding them or feeding them. Well, your cat just associated being loud and obnoxious with love and food so you can expect they are going to do this behavior more often to get want they want.

Cat owners are frustrated and confused when their cat training practices are not successful. Well, if you are trying to train them like a dog it won’t work. Using punishment to train your cat like using a spray bottle to spray your cat when they are doing something wrong doesn’t make them afraid of behaving badly it just makes them avoid you since you are the one spraying them. If you’re are the one making the environment unpleasant they associate the punishment with you.

One major cat behavior problem that cat owners have is that their cat is not using their litter box. This is a good place to start eliminating anything your cat finds unpleasant. Cats are private animals and want privacy when using their litter box. Here you would put the litter box in a quiet low traffic area. It’s important to keep the litter box clean as well. No one likes to use a dirty toilet. Another reason a cat won’t use their litter box is because it’s shared with another cat. They want their own space and will find a place to eliminate where they’ll get privacy.

What do you do if your cat is scratching up your home. You need to know that your cat scratches out of naturaly instinct. This is not something that can or should be stopped. Your cat scratching to groom their nails, relieve stress, and mark their territoy. The only ways to stop cat scratching is to buy a something that is ok for them to scratch on and praise them for using it. To encourage your cat to use the scratching post or whatever you decide to buy them rub a little catnip on it. They’ll get in the habit of using the post and leave your stuff alone.

To have a healthy relationship with your cat avoid punishment at all costs, and remember they love attention. Popular belief is that cat are anit-social nothing cat be further from the truth. They are just independent. Cat’s will do anything for a little attention just make sure to give to them when they are not misbehaving or you will reinforce that bad behavior with a pleasant association. An important note to remember is to take your cat to the vet before you decide their bad habit is a behavioral problem. They may be ill and need medical attention and that’s why they are acting out.

Take a little time to understand your cat. It will strengthen your relationship with them and keep their behavior under control.

Tips On How To Prevent Your Dog From Eating Up Your Cat’s Food!

Tips On How To Prevent Your Dog From Eating Up Your Cat’s Food!

Five Tips how to keep your Cat’s Food Safe from Your Dog!

Does Your Dog Eat up Poor little Kitty’s Food? Is your cat meowing miserably because when she finally gets to the food dish it is empty and she’s left hungry? Does your dog gobble up both HIS food and your CAT’S food?

Have you tried everything you could think of to stop your dog from eating up your cat’s food and beenunsuccessful?

Did you try to shout, scream and maybe even hit your dog for doing it again and again?

Are you just FED UP??? Calm down, I shall help you now stop your dog from eating your cat’s food up. If you want your dog to stop eating up your cats food then read these tips carefully on how to prevent your dog from stealing your cat’s food away.

How to Keep your Dog out of your Cat’s Food Dish!

Get a square cardboard box from a local supermarket or book shop.
The size of the cardboard box depends on the size of your cat: If your cat is a big maine coon cat for example, then it would be best to get a big sized box in which your cat could comfortably fit. However, if you have a small cat, you needn’t get a such a big box.
Place the opening of the box upside down onto the floor where your cat normally eats.
Cut a small flap hole into one of the sides of the box just big enough for your cat to squeeze through. Make sure that there is no chance that your dog could fit even just his head through it.
Place your >”>cat’s food dish inside of the cardboard box.
Fill your cat’s food dish up with your cat’s favorite food.
Watch what your cat does.
Either your cat will squeeze right through the flap into the box to get at the food or else she might not.

If your cat doesn’t want to go into the box it might be because of one or more of these reasons state below:

The box is new and unknown to your cat.
Your cat hasn’t been in the box before and doesn’t know if it’s safe.
Your cat is worried to get in.
There might be a smell of another animal inside of the box, a dog or a different cat.
The opening is too small for your cat and your cat thinks that she might not fit in.
Your cat isn’t hungry.

You can mostly tell if your cat is scared of the new box by her behavior: That is, if your cat is staying away from the box then you can see that she is worried about it. Is your cat meowing sadly, swishing her tail back and forth, and rubbing against your legs? Are her ears back as though the box were her enemy?

If this is the case, you will want totry this:

Pet your cat, lift her up, calm her down and whisper soothing things to her. Cats can often tell how we humans feel by the sound of our voices. Therefore, talking to our cats in a soothing voice can often have affect on our fellow purring machines.
Tell her the box is okay and that you love her.
Open up the box to show her that there is nothing dangerous inside of it.
Place it upside down and let her explore it at her own pace. If she doesn’t feel like exploring it right then, maybe she will later on.
Lift her food dish up in front of her eyes and place it inside of the open box.
Do it a few times, taking the dish up from where you have always placed it.
This will make your cat get used to the idea that the food dish is not anymore where it has used to be and that the new box is okay and safe for her to get into. Cats have very short memories so doing it a few times will cause your cat to remember it better where the food dish is.
Show your cat where the flap is.
Hold the flap open so that your cat can get in and out easily.
Try widening the flap orholeif your cat still doesn’t want to go in.
Place some of your cat’s favorite cat treats and snacks inside of it so that she can smell them and climb inside of the box to get them. After doing this a few times, your cat will get used to the idea that the box is a good box after all and want to go into it all the time!

TIP:To make sure that the box won’t tip over or be knocked over by your dog, place some heavy books or stones on top of it.

If all this doesn’t work, then try feeding your cat and dog in different rooms with the doors shut between them so that the dog won’t be able to get at your cat’s food dish.

Hope this helps you.

Good Luck!

Training Your Dog To Live With Cats

by Justin on Nov.21, 2010, under Pets

Training Your Dog To Live With Cats

Dogs and cats can make natural bedfellows quite literally. Though many dogs chase cats naturally because of their hunting instinct, it can be easy for them to co-exist. All it takes is a little patience.

Why is cat training important?

It’s very important to socialise your dog with cats even if you don’t have one. That way you can go to other places with cats – friends houses, pubs/bars, hotels, vets (you will need to do that occasionally of only for vaccinations!) and know that your dog will be well behaved.

I have ex-racing greyhounds as part of my pack’. In all, I’ve owned 6 greyhounds of my own in the last 10 years and fostered several through rescue. I’ve had other dogs as well, most through rescue routes. And I’ve still got my fat cat Hoolie who has lived with dogs all her life.

ALL of these dogs have been trained to live with cats reasonably easily. In some cases it was a matter of minutes, in others a few weeks. I know that I can go anywhere with them and they will love to meet the resident cat even if the cat doesn’t like them!

Initial tips

If you get a rescue dog, always see if the rescue centre can give you any indication of results of their own cat testing. Some places do cat testing and others do not. However remember that some dogs are so traumatised by their background that you might not get a fair reading of the situation until they have been in a home environment and settled down.

If you get a puppy from a breeder who has cats themselves, this is a good start but you should continue that cat training as the puppy matures. That will build on the good foundations they already have.

If you don’t have a cat of your own, find a friend with a cat who can help out. Or maybe a local rescue centre that has centre cats’ (eg they lie on the reception desk) might help you. Dog behaviourists or the breeder might also be willing to assist.

The process

I thought I would describe what I do with my dogs, including puppies. This works with a cat which is reasonably well adjusted and not overly timid or nervous. This is just my system and is has worked well for me in the past.

I introduce them first inside the house. Getting the dog used to the cat indoors means that you can then do the same training outdoors. This is so the dog learns that cats are not to be chased indoors or out.
I always introduce the dog to the cat. It’s difficult to get someone to bring a cat close to a dog if the cat doesn’t want to go. Have you tried giving a cat a tablet, or trying to put it into a cat box to take it to the vets? It’s like trying to untangle a very strong, slippery octopus.
I have the dog and cat in the same room with the doors closed. There is always somewhere high for the cat to leap to, out of reach of dog nose, such as the back of a high sofa, window sill, bookshelf or similar.
I try as far as possible to have someone else with me, armed with a squeezy water bottle or good water pistol you’ll see why in a minute (it’s something to do with not quite having enough hands!)
The cat is allowed to be free in the room. The dog is kept leaded (leashed) and muzzled in the case of ex-racing greyhounds or any rescue dog where history is uncertain. In the case of new puppies, leaded (leashed) should be sufficient.
Keep the dog sitting or standing next to you. Hold the lead firmly. Watch the body language if the hackles (fur on the back of the neck) rise and the dog goes stiff, it’s squaring up for a lunge.
If the dog lunges at the cat, immediately correct with a sharp pull back on the lead accompanied by a firm loud NO’ or LEAVE’ command. Don’t shout or scream but raise your voice enough to make it understood this is not acceptable. (The cat might leap up high to get out of the way.)
If you can, at the same time, the dog lunges, get the other person to squirt the dog with water between the eyes. If you don’t have a friend, squirt the dog yourself as best you can as soon as the lunge starts. And it’s only water so the floor or carpet will dry out pretty quickly. Greyhounds and sighthounds generally don’t tend to like water so this is a great non-physical method of making it unpleasant for them to lunge at the cat. Many other dogs are the same. It doesn’t tend to work so well with water dogs or working dogs such as labradors or spaniels!
Repeat the process until you see the dog is calming down and learning that lunging at the cat = being reprimanded and squirted.
When the dog stops lunging reward with praise good boy/girl’, a pat or stroke and a treat.
Repeat the process until the dog and cat actually meet up and can sniff each other. At this point, ensure that the dog is still held very firmly on the lead (leash). If your dog is muzzled, do not take off the muzzle until you are sure they will not lunge and bite. This might take a while. Some dogs are very intelligent and will bide their time. Reward all good behaviour positively with praise and treats.
After the dog and cat have sniffed each other, a good sign is when the cat actually rubs against the dog. This is saying you are my friend’. Cats have scent glands on their heads so when they rub their heads against you it’s marking you as territory’ and friend’.
If the dog responds well to that by calm acceptance and sniffing the cat’s bottom, rather than lunging and barking, reward with treats.
At this point, I would try letting the dog have the full length of the lead (leash) but keep it muzzled if a muzzle has been used all along, walking it around the room with the cat still in residence.
Once all lunging behaviour, including any suggestion of lunging has ceased, I would then allow the dog off the leash. This is when having two people working together on the dog is helpful if you do suddenly get a lunge/chase, there is more than one set of hands to grab the dog.
Always throughout the process reinforce good behaviour with praise/treats so the dog learns nice to the cat = treats’ and lunging at the cat = unpleasant things’.
Once the dog and cat have accepted each other, allow them to reside in each other’s space under close supervision. NEVER leave a dog and cat alone together in a room or a house until you are completely satisfied that they get along completely.

How long does it take?

Sometimes the entire process can take only a few minutes. But sometimes it might take much longer. Be prepared for this and break the process down into bite sized chunks. If you sense that either animal is getting tired/stressed, STOP immediately and give them both a rest. Half an hour at a time is more than enough. Spread those training chunks over as many days as is necessary.

Supervision and interaction

Make sure the dog and cat can have separate rooms or spaces in the house in between sessions. Some people allow the cat to be upstairs and the dog downstairs while the training is taking effect. They should not come into contact without supervision until you are happy with the cat and the dog behaving themselves correctly.

It helps if you use a crate as the dog (and cat) beds because then they can both be confined when you are not around. Alternatively, you could crate them alternately the dog in their crate and the cat out, and the cat in their crate and the dog out.

Always make sure you fully supervise all interactions until you are sure that there is no problem.

Once this is done, move the process outside into your garden or yard and start all over again.

Final words

This is the process which has always worked well for me in the past. Different people may have different strategies. There is also information on the internet about cat training so consult that too.

The key to successful cat/dog training is to always read your own animals’ body language. You know them better than me so you’ll have a good idea which bits of this process work well for you and which might not.

Diet Tips For Obese Cats

by Justin on Nov.07, 2010, under Pets

Diet Tips For Obese Cats

One of the major concerns for all cat ownersto watch out for is their cat gaining too much weight. Obesity in pets is becoming more visible and as a good cat owner you want to take care of your cat’s health. This article will provide some tips for obese cats.

You may be asking why I should be concerned about my cat being overweight. For starters, you may not know which foods are best to feed your cat and how many treats you should give your pet during training sessions. Diet tips for obese cats will provide you with this information so you can have a healthier pet.

The following topics will be covered: why is obesity dangerous for pets, how can I know if my cat is overweight, facts about feeding cats, establish a regular feeding time, and how are treats different from normal cat food.

Why Is Obesity Dangerous For Cats?

Just as obesity is dangerous for humans, it is also for cats. The extra pounds can weight in on their cardiovascular and respiratory systems, exacerbating existing conditions and may cause new ones. Fat pets are prone to injury, more at risk in surgery, and open to other conditions such as diabetes. A list of additional problems is; decreased stamina, diminished immune function, and digestive disorders are consequences of an overweight cat.

If your cat is severely overweight it can diminish your pet’s quality of life. It is important that you, as the owner, control your pet’s intake of food and treats.

How Can I Know If My Cat Is Overweight?

Here is an interesting fact, between 25 to 40 percent of cats are obese or are likely to become obese. So, what can I do about it? Good question. So, here is how you can take action now:

Monitor your cat’s weight. They don’t get overweight overnight. Keep a close eye on them. Be sure to have your pet exercise daily. Failure to keep your pets weight under control may cause your cat to be a higher risk for diabetes, arthritis and other health related conditions.
Here is how you can know if your pet is overweight when you gently press down as you are petting her. If you are not able to feel her ribs, consider taking her to the veterinarian for an exam. When any underlying medical causes are ruled out, your veterinarian can help you develop a proper nutrition and exercise program to remove the excess weight.

Facts About Feeding Cats

Just as humans require a healthy balanced diet, so do cats. As a cat owner, you can provide your pet with the best quality cat food that has all of the nutrients your pet requires together with a high level of palatability. Do not add any human food to your cat’s diet. Doing so may upset the nutrients of a balanced diet.

Milk. Here is a little known fact; milk is not a substitute for water. As a food, it’s incomplete and does not provide a balanced diet. Milk contains lactose and requires lactase to break it down in the pet’s intestine. Too much milk can cause diarrhea.

Raw eggs. Repeatedly giving your cat raw eggs can cause a deficiency of the vitamin biotin which can cause a loss of hair, dermatitis, and poor growth. Restrict this item in your pet’s diet.

Raw fish. Some raw fish can cause a deficiency of the vitamin thiamine. Signs of this vitamin deficiency include anorexia, abnormal posture, weakness, seizures, and even death.

Raw meats. Most cat owners think that giving your cat meat is good for them. Usually raw meat does not contain all of the nutrients for a balanced diet. This must be added. Also, raw meat may contain parasites, and cooked meats can be high in fat and do not contain a proper balanced diet. I would stay away from giving your pet raw meat to eat.

Raw liver. Raw liver fed in large quantities, can cause vitamin A toxicity in cats. Small soft bones, pork chop and chicken bones, should never be given to cats. They may lodge in the cat’s mouth or throat.

Table scraps. Table scraps will not provide your pet with the proper nutrition your pet requires. Best advice is never to feed your cat table scraps. Once you start, it is very difficult to stop. So, don’t start.

Supplements. Supplements are not required when a normal healthy cat is being fed a complete and balanced diet. A balanced diet can be found in the pet food you are feeding your cat. The same is true for additional minerals. You can find this with high quality cat food. Be a good shopper and provide your pet with the best quality cat food so you don’t have to purchase supplements.

Establish a Regular Feeding Time

This is important for your pet’s digestive health and regular bowel movements. The first step is to determine the correct quantity of food required to maintain a healthy weight. Next, is to establish a regular routine time for feeding your pet. Knowing when your cat will be hungry will assist you when you plan training sessions. Part of your pet’s meal will include treats or rewards.

How Are Treats Different From Normal Cat Food?

Everyone one likes to have a treat once in a while. So does your pet. But, what is the difference between a treat and dry cat food? Cat food is higher in nutrition than treats. However, if you want to reward your kitty with a different flavor or texture, than a treat is the ticket. They are like desserts and should be given sparingly.

Cat food is higher in protein and should make up the bulk of your pet’s diet. Some treats can be nutritional, so read the labels before making your selection. If you offer tidbits that are different from their meals, it will add to your cat’s pleasure, making training more successful. This will also help build a strong bond between owner and pet.

Treats should not be more than 10% of your cat’s total diet for the day. You will need to watch out here because giving your pet too much treats can be a cause for obesity.

By following the above diet tips for obese cats will help your pet to stay healthy and have a longer life.

Direction of use : 1/Watch the video (funny, eh?) 2/Browse comments (where the fun really is… ;o) === NB : If you believe the cat is actually in pain, you obviously know nothing about cats. Should this be painfull to the cat, it would try escape or attack. ===
